Wood pellets are refined biomass, a solid fuel with low moisture, high energy content that are easy to transport & store.
They are cylindrical in shape and formed by compressing clean dry sawdust or ground wood fibre, produced with a maximum particle size of 4mm, at a maximum moisture content of 11%. This creates a valuable high density wood energy commodity for use in industrial or automated domestic heating systems.
What are pellets produced from?
Pronominally pellets are produced from dry sawdust or cutter shavings; in many cases dry sawdust is in short supply so drying facilities are required. They are produced in two diameter sizes: 6mm for the Central European market; 8mm for the Scandinavian market and vary in length.
The most obvious physical benefits of wood pellets are their ability to flow during delivery usually via blower truck or for ease of handling, packed in 12.5kg sacks or 700kg bulk bags.
During combustion, wood pellets are metered into the combustion chamber via an auger, where primary and secondary air assist in the combustion process to gasify the pellets in temperatures in excess of 500°C at 90% efficiency providing very clean smokeless emissions with minimal hydrocarbon, nitric oxide or sulphur gasses all considerably lower than combusting fossil fuels.
