Planners at the East Riding of York council have approved the combined heat and power project, which will use straw to generate around 5MW of power.
German company M&W Zander, which has its UK office in Wiltshire, will be building and operating the plant on Tesco's behalf, the supermarket chain told New Energy Focus today.
It will provide the equivalent power for eight Tesco superstores, with excess electricity being exported to the national grid. The project is expected to save 17,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions a year.
The supermarket chain said it was looking to put further investment in CHP systems following the Goole project, including a facility at its Livingstone distribution centre.
